New alkylzinc complexes with bulky tris(triazolyl)borate ligands: surprising water stability and reactivity.

Bulky alkylzinc complexes, (Ttz(tBu,Me))ZnMe and (Ttz(tBu,Me))ZnEt, show remarkable stability towards water and both complexes crystallize with one molecule of adventitious water hydrogen bonded to two triazole rings; in contrast the less bulky complex, (Ttz(Ph,Me))ZnEt, reacts with water to yield (Ttz(Ph,Me))(2)Zn.

Complexes with bulky hydrotris(triazolyl)borate (Ttz) ligands, TtzCuCO, were used to probe how acids change the donor properties of Ttz ligands. (Ttz(tBu,Me))CuCO shows four distinct protonation states and a gradual increase in the CO stretch. The increased electrophilic nature of the Cu center upon protonation leads to enhanced C-H activation catalysis.

Tris(2-pyridyl)borates are introduced as a new robust and tunable "scorpionate"-type ligand family. A facile synthesis of this hitherto unknown ligand and its complexation to Fe(II) are described; the optical and electrochemical properties of the resulting iron complex are compared to complexes derived from tris(pyrazolyl)borate, tris(2-pyridyl)aluminate, and corresponding charge-neutral ligands.
